On Thursday, April 19, 2018, the Conservation Voters of South Carolina announced their endorsement of Representative James Smith for Governor of South Carolina at an event attended by CVSC Board Chair Jennie Williamson Pezé, CVSC Executive Director John Tynan, and activists from across the state.
Representative Smith has been fierce advocate for and protector of our state’s natural resources, leading the efforts to establish and reform surface water withdrawal, as well as fighting to protect the rights of citizens to hold polluters accountable for illegal pollution.
“South Carolina needs a governor who knows how to work across party lines to make conservation a priority. James Smith is that leader and should be our next governor,” CVSC Board Chair Jennie Williams Pezé said. “He has spent his career speaking up for the rights of all citizens to breathe clean air, drink safe water, and build a clean energy future. CVSC is proud to endorse him.”
Citing his efforts to establish and continue to fund the South Carolina Conservation Bank, CVSC Executive Director John Tynan stated, “James Smith has shown time after time that he will fight – and win – for the rights of our citizens to a clean and healthy environment. He values people over profit and is the leader South Carolina needs and deserves.”
“We must fight to protect our environment and natural resources. Protecting our natural heritage is not about today – it is about protecting it for those who come after us so that they can appreciate all that this beautiful state has to offer,” Representative Smith said. “As Governor – I will protect our coastlines from drilling and work to advance renewable energy to preserve our state’s natural beauty.”
