Tri-County Technical College’s new Student Success Center in Pendleton, SC, designed by architecture, interiors, and planning firm LS3P, recently won a 2018 Shaw Contract design award. The project was one of 35 awards given out of 537 entries worldwide; only 17 winning projects are located in the US.  Shaw Contract, a leading international flooring manufacturer, sponsors the design awards program to highlight the impacts of design in action across diverse project types.

The three-story, 72,000 SF Student Success Center centralizes primary student services under one roof. The top floor houses a modern learning commons with open and enclosed group study spaces, an active learning classroom, tutoring center, and a three-story vertical book storage unit which allows for a flexible floor plate. The space also features a central hub with floor-to-ceiling glazing which frames sweeping views of the campus to the south and a forest view to the north. The view welcomes students using built-in seating compartments or open, flexible seating areas for quiet study.

LS3P Interior Designer Jessica Burgess, NCIDQ, IIDA, believes the new facility will be integral to achieving TCTC’s long-term goals. “This substantial building nestles into the steep campus landscape, merging seamlessly with the campus environment while framing outdoor views and maximizing natural light,” she explains. “The resulting space is both efficient and inspiring, and supports TCTC’s ultimate goals of improving student retention, ease of matriculation, and overall student success. Student input informed the design process at all stages, and the students’ energy is evident throughout the building.”

Dynamic flooring aids wayfinding, adds a student-centered aesthetic, and delineates space throughout the building. Throughout the space, color is used as a tool to guide movement, spur interactions, and reflect the purpose of each space. In many instances, the color breaks boundaries by crossing from circulation spaces into enclosed areas, animating the space and providing visual interest. The bold colors and creative use of pattern creates learning spaces that encourage students to gather, linger, interact, and collaborate and supports a welcoming facility which will serve the college and its student well for years to come.
