Carolina Teacher Induction Program (CarolinaTIP) received The Riley Institute at Furman’s annual Dick and Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award at a celebration Nov. 12 in Columbia.
Former U.S. Secretary of Education and S.C. Governor Dick Riley announced the winner and presented the award, which is given annually to an education program in the state that is successfully improving outcomes for public school students in South Carolina.
“South Carolina sets the example in so many good ways. We need to do a better job of talking about it. We honor and celebrate Carolina TIP and the two award finalists today for improving the lives of children across our state,” said Riley.
CarolinaTIP serves as a bridge of support for new teachers. The program is a collaboration between the University of South Carolina’s College of Education and 38 schools in five districts across the Midlands. CarolinaTIP helps recent graduates make the transition from college students to successful classroom teachers.
As the top award recipient, CarolinaTIP received a $10,000 cash award from Aflac, and the two finalists received $1,000 each. The award finalists are: Pickens County Career and Technology Center, a center where faculty work to help students develop the skills for success in college and the workplace; and Wings for Kids, a comprehensive, high-quality afterschool initiative designed to equip at-risk K-5th grade kids with the skills they need to succeed in school, stay in school, and thrive in life.
